Teamwork and optimism towards the future and respect for the natural rhythms of the vine: Values underlying the 2021 harvest of Monte del Frà winery.

The Monte del Frà winery, which has a history of three generations associated with the viticulture of the Custoza’s territory and the production of Valpolicella Classica, is preparing to conclude its first two weeks of harvest 2021.

Typically, September represents a critical month for the wineries in the area and more so for Monte del Frà winery. By September 15th, this winery will have completed 30% of the harvest 2021, and this will comprise early grapes that include the Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon Blanc, and Incrocio Manzoni.

Before the winery concludes its harvest 2021 in October, it is essential to give a provisional assessment of the performance of the vintage.

Notably, the growth and ripening path followed by the grapes was first marked by an unexpected event of hailstorm in some plots around April. This setback reduced the quantity of grapes, but because it happened during the active phase of the vine, it managed the impact and rejuvenated back to life.

In August, there was a delay in vegetative development attributed to a not very hot summer. Luckily, clear days and cool nights accelerated growth, allowing the vine to regain and reach its ripening season on time.

The veraison benefited from the dry and warm climate marked by a good temperature range on both days and nights.

Claudio Introini, the Monte del Frà winery consultant, says, “At the moment, the grapes show excellent quality levels that will translate into ideal aromatic profiles and optimal densities.” The oenologist Elia Bartolomai added, “The harvested grapes have a balanced ratio of sugars and acidity and are in perfect health conditions.”

The late white grapes, such as Garganega and Trebbiano Toscano, are healthy and the general ripening trend suggests that they will have an excellent quality value by harvest 2021.

“The vineyard and cellar team is truly extraordinary: energy and passion are the company’s essential elements,” explains the owner, Marica Bonomo. He also says, “The results obtained are also thanks to a close-knit team that works every day to produce quality wines that respect our territory.”
